Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, the last of the ten Sikh Gurus. Born in 1666 in Patna, Bihar, India, this year marks the 350th Prakash Parv. Guru Gobind Singh is remembered and revered for his great sacrifice where he along with his family attained martyrdom in a war against Aurangzeb in 1705. This apart he is also a celebrated figure for having created the Khalsa (Pure), a community of the faithful who wore visible symbols of their faith and trained as warriors. Today the Khalsa comprises all practising Sikhs.

A harvest festival, one that’s all about the backbone of our economy, a time to unite with family and bond with cousins, that’s what Sankranti has been synonymous for many, and then there are also those, who think of it as just any other holiday.

Traditionally Sankranti celebrations meant a time to come together as a family and pay respect to everything about agriculture, which includes even the cattle,that was an integral part of farming. Every ritual was centered around worshipping and paying respects to the animals.

Let’s change – this time to our original form!

Bhogi Festival or Lohri marks the beginning of Magha month and is said to signify the migration of sun to a different tropic. Part of the four-day celebrations of the harvest called Pongal. And the first day is marked to honor Lord Indra, “the God of Clouds and Rains.”

The day ideally begins by lighting a bonfire at dawn using log, solid fuels, and other old wooden- unused furniture in the house are burnt to symbolise that people are preparing to adapt new changes in life.
